What is this project about?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic condition which has a significant impact on people’s quality of life. Despite much research there is no consensus on the best treatment and prognosis for recovery is poor.
Consultant gastroenterologist Dr Kapur at Barnsley Hospital has been impressed by the results achieved when patients within his department suffering from IBS have been given individualised treatment by a professional homeopath.
This one year ‘prospective service evaluation’ will track the progress of patients being treated in this way, using a recognised scientific method. The study will continue to build the evidence base to support inclusion of professional homeopaths as part of hospital teams for difficult to treat conditions such as IBS.

Ms Jackie Raw RSHom
Ms Raw has a background in business, working for several years as an Account Manager for a blue-chip I.T. company, working with global organisations in sectors including aerospace, oil & gas and manufacturing. Following the profound success of homeopathic treatment she received for a back injury, she retrained as a homeopath, qualifying from the Sheffield College of Classical Homeopathy in 2002. Ms Raw is actively involved in research within the NHS, encouraging the availability of homeopathy within primary and secondary care. She was part of the research team which carried out a trial assessing Homeopathic Treatment of IBS (partially funded by HRI) and is now studying ‘Rheumatology: Diseases, Processes, Treatment & Care’ at Leeds University.
Why is this project important?
“I am passionate about patients being able to access high quality homeopathic care, free of charge within the NHS. This service evaluation would help to demonstrate just how beneficial it can be to integrate homeopathy and conventional medicine, especially for patients with conditions which do not respond so well to conventional medicine alone.” Jackie Raw
